Osteopathy is the alternative treatment of any muscle or joint pain in the body from headache to foot pain.
Osteopaths focus on the structure of the body using safe, natural, manual treatment,
which offers a caring approach to the individual needs of each patient,
throughout life from birth to old age.
I take a full case history of the present symptoms and a general medical history. I then examine the patient’s joint movements, muscle quality and strength and nerve function. (Note: no machines are involved in this examination).
Examination MAY involve the patient to undress partially with consent.
I tell the patient what I think is going on and how the pain can be relieved. I then give them a treatment in the first appointment and advice on how many, if any, further sessions are required. As a general rule, the longer you have suffered with a particular problem, the more sessions you require. People usually feel relief after the first session, though it may take two to see a change. I do not do block sessions so you are not pressured to come a certain time every week.

My treatments also involve advise on the best work ergonomics (chair and desk set up) to prevent further strain. Exercises and dietary advice are given if necessary. Stress management and how to balance ones lifestyle more effectively.
Depending on the diagnosis, various different techniques are used to treat the body. These include; soft tissue massage, rhythmic passive movements to improve joint mobility, manipulation techniques to improve the mobility and range of joint movement, stretching, functional unwinding of muscle which involves encouraging the muscle into a position of ease, rehabilitation work, cranial techniques and visceral techniques (which is the gentle work on chest, abdomen or pelvis for pain relief around the area).
